If the sounds of the native Americas and indeed the culture of its indigenous people fill you with passion then you will not want to be without “Eye of the wolf” by Medwyn Goodall. This is a fresh and innovative journey through old territory mixing Medwyn’s familiarity of the genre with a new drive and passion that illustrates the constant evolution of his musical style. Focusing away from the music for a moment the CD cover itself demands some attention. A stunning wolf shares the cover with the mighty American eagle blended with a backdrop of cave paintings and a stunning sunset. It was in no small part due to the cover that I was attracted very strongly to make this my next choice from MG Music. Rest assured that the music is even more stunning than the art arrangement. This CD has everything you would expect from an American Indian influenced album incorporating involving native rhythms, authentic apache voices and the deep sense of tradition and history that seems to emanate from all of Mr Goodall’s offerings In this genre. It also breaks new ground introducing a fusion of bass and electric guitar, fantastically enhanced percussion and keyboards which, when combined with the more traditional aspects, give this CD a “great spirit” of its own. Medwyn successfully brings a new depth of sound to this CD with a number of guest guitars from JIC and the authentic native Apache Indian voice of Allenroy Paquin. As such the 7 tracks of this disc redefine the face of modern American Indian music. The composition and performance is intoxicating, the representations behind each track are truly heartfelt and the vocals are spoken not only in native apache but also in English. If your wondering what your next CD should be and if your attracted to the imagery and spirit of the native Americans then don’t be afraid to let the “Eye of the Wolf” fall upon you. Dance to the rhythm of the drums, walk upon the mother earth and give thanks to the “Great Spirit”.

I have to admit that some of the previous Native American albums have left me unmoved but this one is something different. Medwyn has used some of the keyboard sounds from older albums but has blended these with some fantastic rhythms, wonderful guitar sounds and keyboards, all of this layered over prayers and chants both in the Native language and, for the first time, in English. Just wait till you hear the last four tracks on this cd, possibly the best 20 minutes or so that Medwyn has ever recorded and THAT is saying A LOT !!! A brilliant album - one not to be missed.

I have always been particularly fond of native American music, but I have to say that "fond" does not do this CD justice. The way that Med has used the guitar, musical instruments and the songs of the native American Indian and combined them together, has produced an outstanding piece of music. You can close your eyes and listen to the music and chants and almost visualise yourself there at the camp fire. If you haven't got it yet - BUY IT!
